a deck in a nest

I promised updates about our deck work, and here it is! Two weeks ago Dan and his father completed our deck. The construction was relatively simple – not one part of the deck is attached to the house nor sunk into the ground. However, it is completely stable and sturdy. We are very excited to enjoy coffee, brunch and crosswords on our deck some weekend morning (once Dan is feeling better) this summer! Just the other night we fired up the grill for a dinner of halibut and green beans.

Dan had a patio set with chairs that were still usable, but a little dull and dingy. Thanks to a great suggestion from Dan’s mom, I painted a few chairs so we have somewhere to sit until we purchased a patio set. As part of the deck plans (and soon to come), Dan wants to build a hollow bench for sports equipment storage and room for a cooler. However, in the meantime we purchased an inexpensive patio set from Target that will add more seating opposite the bench.

Our backyard will be even lovelier once we get everything planted. I hope to have both a vegetable and flower garden in the back, ferns, lilies, a hammock and possibly a pond. This will all make for another room added to our small living space. I can’t wait!
